The Birth Of FIA
OUR STORY
Friends In Action Intl. Was Birthed From A Need To Support Missionaries & Their Efforts In Remote Locations.
Since 1942, New Tribes Mission (NTM, now known as Ethnos 360) has commissioned and supported missionaries across the globe. In 1991, Jerry Smyth and five other men associated with NTM saw an ever-increasing need for construction projects to assist missionaries in areas lacking infrastructure. With NTM’s input, FRIENDS of NTM was created as a separate corporation and subsidiary of NTM in 1992. The name changed to Friends in Action International in April of 2000.
When It All Began
Friends of New Tribes Missions is officially established; Construction of first work project at McNeal, AZ.
First headquarters established
Friends of finished developing their first Headquarters established at Mansfield, MO.
Executive Director Appointed
Tim Johnston joined Board of Directors and appointed Executive Director.
Medical Missions Begins
Medical Missions began by providing kits for missionaries; built Sepik Star barge to transport supplies and machinery. FIA missionaries placed in Papua New Guinea.
Airstrip and Well Drilling Projects | Canada Board & Shipping Dept. established
Sorimi Airstrip constructed in Papua New Guinea; Well-drilling equipment positioned in Ivory Coast; Canada Board created; Shipping Department established at HQ.
Church in Bolivia | Airstrip in PNG | New Name for FIA
Construction on Santa Cruz Church in Bolivia and Hewa Airstrip in Papua New Guinea; Name changed to Friends in Action International.
Woodshop in PNG | Rama Cay survey | First well drilled | Missionary to Brazil resourced
Kimbe Woodshop Ministry in Papua New Guinea; Survey of Rama Cay in Nicaragua; First well drilled in Ivory Coast; Truck and laptop provided to missionary in Paccas Novas Brazil.

USA HQ completed in Middletown, PA; Carpenter shop, guest cabins, generator shed built and Bible conference hosted for Rama Cay.

Orphanage support in Bolivia; Peru house construction for Ashenika people; Teaching at UDG; Bolivia Riverboat renovation and construction on Indigenous Training Center.
Advancements in West Africa | Nicaragua | USA HQ
Second drill rig sent to West Africa, doubling wells drilled to 60 each year (30,000+ people received water); two water wells constructed, solar system, sawmill, freezer, and pump delivered, Bible conference hosted for Rama; jungle cabins completed and radio tower repaired from lightning strike in Bolivia; bathrooms added to church and missionary home and concrete floors to community homes for the Miskito people in Nicaragua; New racking added to HQ warehouse and all work completed by volunteers.

Shannon Medich came onboard as Communications Director.
Vanuatu missionary housing project
Volunteer teams completed a missionary housing project and repaired a water pump and generator in Vanuatu.
Messiah College engineering partners | Rama community celebrations
Messiah College Engineering partnered with FIA to complete a foot-bridge, first water baptism by immersion, and first wedding in new community conducted for the Rama Cay Indians. Funds distributed to East and West New Britain Islands in Papua New Guinea for Bible teaching and discipling materials; El Misionero repainted and rewired.
Bolivia | Training Center Completed
Two dormitories to house villagers attending Bolivia’s Indigenous Training Center are completed. A large kitchen and a secondary kitchen, with an open-frame construction for a wood firepit and mud oven, were built to accommodate Bolivian-style village cooking for the guests.
New Vanuatu leaders | Vanuatu projects
Levi and Jenn Pitman join FIA to oversee Vanuatu ministries; Work team made extensive repairs on equipment in Vanuatu and provided preliminary assessment for future base camp construction; Constructed missionary home in Vanuatu.
Vanuatu | Base Camp
14 volunteers began base camp construction (complete cabins, begin shower house, kitchen/dining building, repair and repaint machinery) which will house volunteers working on running 16-miles of gravity-fed piping to 30 villages, 3 clinics, and a school (more than 3,500 NiVan).
PNG | New Prison Ministry
A new prison ministry opportunity opens in Papua New Guinea. Over 25 – 30 new inmates from dozens of remote villages are given physical provisions, as well as a chance to hear the Gospel and receive a Bible or prayer each week.
Bolivia | Missionary Training
45 Bolivians trained with Jack and Nel Nugter to become missionaries and teachers to their own people.
Nicaragua | Rama Cay | Floating Dry Dock
Volunteer teams teach life-skills as they build a floating Nydock boat dock with the Rama Cay people of Nicaragua.
Nicaragua | Rama West Africa | Drilling | Boliva | Dorcas Vessel | Floating Dry Dock
Volunteers drilled 5 new wells in 2 weeks in West African villages; A new, smaller vessel called “Dorcas” was added to expand the El Misionero medical riverboat ministry in Bolivia.
West Africa
Growing conflict and increasing terrorism lead to safety concerns and in-country restrictions on FIA’s well drilling efforts in West Africa. Team travel to the area is suspended and plans for relocation are initiated.
Bolivia | Radios to Remote Villages
400 Galcon radios tuned to El Inspiracion and loaded with the Spanish Bible were delivered to remote villages in Bolivia.
Vanuatu | Completed Plumbing Projects
FIA’s Executive Director and volunteers completed plumbing projects on a ranch that provides our base of operations to reach the NiVan people of Vanuatu. The property is also the future site of an indigenous Bible training center to serve missionaries and national pastors in the region.
Moldova | Graduation
FIA team leader taught University of Divine Grace students biblical leadership and participated in graduation of more than 50 students.
Nicaragua | Rama Cay | Completed Laundry House | Bible Conference
Volunteer teams built a water tower, dug a well, welded roof trusses, laid pipe, and mixed concrete for the laundry house floor in the Rama Cay community of Nicaragua. Additional teams hosted a Marriage and Family Bible conference for more than 55 Rama adults and 75 children.
